As of this writing, President Obama is set to sign the Economic Stimulus Package Bill. Of the $787 billion in the package, upwards of $8 billion is be dedicated to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient.
Currently, homeowners can receive a tax credit for up to 10% of the purchase price of qualifying energy efficient products with a cap of $200.
Under the new plan, this tax credit will be increased to 30% of the purchase price of qualifying energy efficient products with a cap of $1500. This is a substantial money saving idea by the Federal Government and one that will help to increase energy efficiency and lower energy costs.
For homeowners looking to replace windows and doors in their home, the energy savings can equal up to 30-40% per year. CNN has a well written article highlighting the energy savings plan within the Economic Stimulus Package.
The bill also creates opportunity for those in low – and middle – income households to weatherize their homes. For more information regarding the Weatherization Assistance Program, visit the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance website.
